#TimeTitles and the Continuing Brilliance of Black Twitter Parody Hashtags

July 25, 2014

By Mia McKenzie

Y’all: I have a bit of a Twitter addiction. I’m working on it, but one of the reasons I find myself on Twitter SO MUCH is that really funny things happen and I love really funny things. For example:

This past Wednesday, TIME Magazine ran a pretty ridiculous story unnecessarily explaining the word “bae”. What in the world does bae mean, anyway? they asked. And then went on to give “a primer on slang that Pharrell likes enough to put in the titles of his songs”. This was eye-roll-worthy for a couple of reasons. First of all, it’s impossible *not* to understand what “bae” means in context. Second, the idea of a white writer “explaining” Black slang to a mostly white audience is pretty appropriative and gross.

Black folks on Twitter got annoyed with TIME for this nonsense. Super-smart, super-funny comedian (and one of my fave Twitter peeps) Pia Glenn (@PiaGlenn) of Black Weekend Update (which you should watch every video of because it is everything) started the parody hashtag #TimeTitles and commenced to dragging TIME in the most hilarious way.

And then other folks started to join in:

And, well, the hilarity took off. Now, I LOVE funny hashtags because writing jokes is one of my absolute favorite things. So, I was all over this. Here are some of my favorites of my own jokes (yes, I fully admit I love my own jokes and I really want to share them with y’all) and some of my faves by other funny folks on the hashtag.

These are a fraction of the amazing jokes that appeared in the hashtag, so you should def check them all out if you haven’t yet. And follow us on Twitter because obvious reasons.
